Others measure a tension force that pulls the force away from the device. There are many load cell systems that can measure both compression and tension force.
- Miniature button load cells
These miniature button load cells tend to measure compression forces only. They are perfect for any application where the space available is quite limited. The load cell is normally cemented into place as it is too small for any kind of mounting hardware. It usually measures the ranges that are available to 500kgs max. This can be used in retrofitting load measurement in machinery that wasn’t designed to take load cells in the first place.
- Standard button load cells
These are the big brothers of the miniature button load cells. The latter is meant for measuring compression only. When you add weight to the module hardware, they are usually made to weigh tanks and silos. The weight module makes sure that the forces are applied correctly and avoid the connection to being opened. This is especially essential with the tall silos where the wind forces on the empty silos that can cause them to topple.
- Bending beams
These load cells can be used for multiple applications as their compact beam shape renders them to fit easily. They have a stainless steel bellows that make them impervious to water. In order to measure the low weights, have a look at the load cells mentioned above. This is because when it comes to bending beams, it has a slightly reduced accuracy at the lower weight ranges.
- Tension/compression canister load cells
This kind of load cells can be usually found on weigh bridges. They are available in many sizes with a good choice of measuring ranges. A rocker column type load cell is used where the load alignment varies. The rocker column type load cell has an exceptional dual radius loading surface. A large radius in the center where the load measurement is made and a smaller radius at the outer extremes. This makes the load cell to rock, preventing serious loads because of differential expansion of weigh bridge.
